Anti-racist behaviours and cultural competence
Tuesday 10th February 2026 12-1.30pm MS Teams

This seminar outlines the findings of a research study exploring anti-racist practice and cultural safety in midwifery education. This work was rooted in the researchers own experiences as student midwives, during which we encountered challenges that highlighted systemic gaps in cultural safety within university education and clinical learning environments. They subsequently conducted a nationwide study involving student midwives across the UK, using a CCCQ-M survey to explore confidence and competence in cultural safety and anti-racist practice. The findings identified significant gaps within UK midwifery education relating to cultural safety and anti-racist practice.
Lavinia is currently Clinical Educator Midwife at Queen Elizabeth Hospital King’s Lynn (QEHKL). The research was undertaken with colleague Liberty Wilkinson. Come along to hear about their research motivation, experience, findings and its translation so far into practice (education, policy and practice).

Hyperemesis Gravidarum: women's and health professionals' experiences
Wednesday 24th September 2025 12-1.30pm MS Teams

This seminar will discuss the findings of a project (and associated projects) that looked at the experiences of women with Hyperemesis Gravidarum (extreme nausea and vomiting in pregnancy) around Health Care Professional support and understanding. The findings give insights into general experiences of life with HG, and to challenges and facilitators to effective care from a range of interactions with different health professionals.
This project included the voices of those with lived experience in its design and took a multi-disciplinary approach, adding to the strength of the findings by offering varied perspectives and insights. The benefits of both of these will also be discussed in the seminar.
Dr Ceri Wilson is an Associate Professor of Mental Health and Wellbeing; Dr Melanie Boyce an Associate Professor in Gender and Social Justice and Dr Claire Hooks, a Registered Midwife and Associate Professor in Midwifery and Women’s Health.
All welcome.
