The first Migrants’ Maternal Health and Early Childhood Research Conference

In November 2024 the Maternity Stream of Sanctuary Research Network hosted their first national conference on migrant maternal health and early childhood research. This was an incredible experience to learn about research going on across the country, and the East of England Midwifery Research Network was represented by Katherine Waterfall who delivered a presentation on a meta-ethnography completed as part of her PhD.
The conference started appropriately with Dr Allison Felker from MBBRACE-UK discussing the most recent confidential enquiry. The 2024 report highlighted the needs of migrant women and those who do not speak English, with one third of women giving birth now being born outside the UK. The conference had a rich variety of speakers including service users, researchers, charity representatives and a final keynote from Wendy Olayiwola BEM (National Maternity Lead for Equity, NHS England).
It was an inspirational event for many reasons – and it certainly provided food for thought when it comes to planning the MRN conference in October 2025!
